The man who paid double for a winch cable
I finally helped a friend replace his winch cable that was really unsafe and I could not believe he would still use the steel cable after the frays I could see while it was rolled up in front of his 52CJA. I continued to tell him wait until you really put the jeep some place where the only way you will get the jeep out of the ravine is use the winch. It was inevitable because as soon as he needed to use it after going over some rocks the jeep crested and was sitting there like a teeter totter and we needed to use some logs, a jack and the winch to pull the vehicle off the rocks
We broke the camera so pictures were unavailable. The only problem we could see was just using the winch would have put too much strain on the axle and ripping out the U joints and the trip would have been over without a doubt. So, after getting help from some other people and getting some logs and jack we put the jack under the log and began pumping the rear end letting it teeter forward while hooking up the winch cable to nearby rocks. Now, I had already cussed him out because I took off by gloves for a second and moved the cable slightly and of course one of the frayed steel wires went into one of my fingers. The type of thing that bleeds for awhile then annoys you for the next week letting you know what you did.
We had the back of the vehicle jacked up and the winch cable hooked up and we began pulling the jeep out and then the cable broke. All I could do is laugh with his jeep sitting there with a log and jack behind it and now the cable were broken. Fortunately, another rider was nearby and he had an extra universal 120 foot galvanized winch cable that he sold my friend for almost double the price because that is what the guy paid for it at the local store and had the receipt to prove it. All I could do was laugh because my friend was so cheap it cost him double and we were only 2 days into our trip. It only took us another 2 hours to get the old cable off and put the new cable on and pull the vehicle.
